Terms to characterize the markings on crack-generated surfaces of brittle materials have come to be used in different ways as a result of the variety of interests and backgrounds of workers in this field and the scattered nature of the literature. A single system of nomenclature which is explicit, universally applicable, and self-consistent should be helpful in aiding communication among fractographers. This paper suggests a possible unified system for discussion and refinement.
