Influence of Specimen Size and Shape on the Singularity-Dominated Zone
SourceImproved computational methods have been used to determine, from photoelastic fracture patterns, those stress field parameters (in addition to the stress-intensity factor) that are associated with different fracture test specimen geometries. The variations with crack tip position of these nonsingular terms in modified-compact-tension and rectangular-double-cantilever-beam specimens have been studied. The results have been utilized to formulate criteria that can be used to quantify the concept of the singularity-dominated zone around a crack tip in specimens of finite dimensions.
