Impact of Stratospheric Ozone on Tropospheric Concentrations
SourceEstimates of the natural background levels of stratospheric ozone (O3) in the lower troposphere are made using both stratospheric mass-balance calculations and radioactive fallout data. There is excellent agreement between both approaches, suggesting that there is a natural background of O3 of approximately 20 percent of the federal 1-h max value (the concentration not to be exceeded for longer than 1 h) or roughly 30 μ/g. The maximum stratospheric O3 concentrations in the lower troposphere on occasion can approach, and even exceed, this federal guideline value.
