Prediction and Control of Macroscopic Fabrication Stresses in Hoop Wound, Fiberglass Rings
SourceMacroscopic, residual (bending) stresses in hoop wound, fiberglass rings are predicted by analytically modeling each phase of their fabrication. Layer “migration” is found to be the manufacturing phase which contributes most significantly to the inducement of bending stresses, once the stress profile has been established by the winding phase. Variation of winding tension through the thickness of the ring is shown to he an effective means of controlling these stresses. This control is demonstrated by presenting numerical and experimental results for rings wound with three winding tension variations.
