Mental tools are needed to remind us of the ultimate uses of aquatic toxicology research. These tools can aid those who manage complex waste materials. A simple conceptual diagram is offered to remind researchers and managers of the need to simultaneously or sequentially acquire, or otherwise integrate, information on exposure, bioconcentration, and effects. The author urges researchers to weigh the benefits and statistical costs of acquiring these data in a multidisciplinary approach.
