Heterotrophic Activity Determination by Substrate Disappearance

Source

The physical, chemical, and microbiological techniques available for monitoring environmental heterotrophic microbial responses to substrate additions are discussed. The advantages of chemical assays in monitoring changes in mixed substrates or substrates added at very low concentrations are stressed. In order to understand the responses of the indigenous microbial flora, however, both chemical and microbiological changes have to be determined.
