History and Status of Performance Tests for Evaluation of Soundness of Cements

The history of the commonly used performance tests for soundness of cement and the evolution of the autoclave test are reviewed. Hydration-expansion characteristics of cement compounds and the relationship between expansion and unsoundness are discussed. A critical evaluation of the status of the autoclave test shows that sufficient new information has been developed since the adoption of the test to warrant reconsideration of its usefulness for ascertaining the soundness of cements in service.
