History and Charge to the Task Group—Among the purposes of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) are advancement of biological science and service to society. In pursuance of these objectives, the AIBS offers advisory services, in matters relevant to biology, to federal agencies and other national organizations. The mechanism most frequently employed is formation of advisory panels or task groups drawing participants from among the 12 000 individual members of AIBS and from those of the 57 affiliated biological subject matter societies whose collective membership exceeds 80 000 distributed through government, industry, and academic organizations.
