The developing need to reverse the process of petroleum product specification proliferation is discussed. Also discussed is the organization, membership, and work plans within ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and the contribution of the Institute of Petroleum, United Kingdom, in reducing the number of existing product quality parameters as well as introducing new criteria for measuring or calculating critical qualities of petroleum products.
