Wear of Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite Material
SourceFiber-oriented glass-filled epoxy composite material was tested to determine the effect of fiber orientation on the wear rate. Three different fiber orientations were tested under constant load with wear occurring on both machined and nonmachined surfaces. In general, both the initial and steady-state friction and wear are lower when sliding occurs on nonmachined surfaces. Also, the variation of friction and wear with fiber orientation is not as marked as it is when sliding against a machined surface. The worst steady-state wear rate was exhibited by samples where the fibers were oriented perpendicular to the wear interface.
