Standards have no true meaning, no life of their own, unless they are implemented, adopted, and used. Implementation can be voluntary, or a result of regulation or marketplace pressures. The development of standards for interface compatibility exemplifies one area of standards-setting which directly involves industry and the unique sides of the environment of the medical technology industry, the concerns of innovation and the innovative process, and raises questions regarding the introduction of new products to the marketplace.
