Chapter 7—Biomaterials: Orthopedic Implants
SourceThe human body is a dehcately balanced chemical entity. It is composed of a variety of materials, a variety of living organisms. The introduction of “foreign” bodies, such as man-made implants, presents a rather precarious task to the surgeon. Not all people will tolerate the same bodily invasions with the same degree of success. Rehabilitation may be relatively quick for some, and time-consuming and painful for others. The orthopedic surgeon is the pivot on which successful implantation may depend.
