A variety of techniques are available for estimating the abundance of ground squirrels. These methods can be classified as censuses, relative and absolute density estimates, and mark-recapture methods. At least several methods from each category have been used to estimate ground squirrel densities. There is no one method that is better than others. Instead, a large number of sampling methods are needed to match the variety of research needs in terms of economics, manpower, time, and ecological conditions.
