The present Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) organization, particularly as it pertains to the inspection program for nuclear facilities, is presented. The NRC's inspection program covering both nonradiological and radiological aspects from initial construction through the operational phase is summarized. Inspection experience, including examples of problem areas and improvements, and trends in current NRC policies relating to environmental monitoring programs are also discussed.
