The author reviews reported radioactive effluents from nuclear facilities in the United States to demonstrate internal inconsistencies which highlight problems in the analytical techniques used for monitoring these effluents. Specific reference is made to problems in monitoring tritium, carbon-14, radioiodines, particulates, and noble gas in these effluents. A brief description is given of an ASTM standard for tritium analysis in plant effluents and the environment and other standards under development for monitoring carbon-14, radioiodine, particulates, and noble gas in plant effluents.
