Attached, Filamentous Algal Communities
SourceThe discussion of attached, filamentous algae is limited to those forms with a holdfast system and filaments that flow out into the water. These macroscopic assemblages are rarely studied, in comparison with the many studies of other types of benthic or planktonic algae. Techniques used to describe and quantify these algal communities are reviewed. Guidelines are set for the quantitative study of a wide variety of situations where attached filamentous algae occur. A continuous-flow algal bioassay system that employs a filamentous alga attached to a removable substrate is presented.
