Analysis of Phenols in Some Industrial Wastewaters
SourceA protocol developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the screening analysis of phenols in industrial wastewaters is evaluated and compared to several alternative methods for extraction of phenols from industrial wastes. Raw creosote and pentachlorophenol wood preserving wastes are used as test samples. An alternative liquid—liquid extraction technique, a steam distillation technique, the use of a continuous liquid—liquid extractor, and an ion exchange technique are evaluated. All the techniques appeared to yield similar results. The protocol procedure is preferred for its simplicity but may not be the method of choice, depending upon the nature of the sample matrix.
