A laboratory test method developed for evaluating rodenticide efficacy against anticoagulant-resistant Norway rats is described. Procurement of the candidate test animals from an area of high resistance is discussed. The test method described involves three consecutive treatment regimens separated by 30-day cleansing periods. The first two treatments employ anticoagulants from two different chemical series to establish cross-resistance; one from the 4-hydroxycoumarin group and one from the 1,3-indandione series. Subsequently the survivors of the two anticoagulant treatments are treated with the candidate rodenticide to evaluate its efficacy against anticoagulantresistant rats.
