Indicators of Recreational Water Quality
SourceWater quality indicators, in general, and a number of potential health effects, water quality indicators, specifically, are examined with regard to their use in predicting the health hazards associated with the use of recreational waters. The factors considered are the requisite characteristics, constraints upon their use and the data obtained thereby, and their evaluation, especially as regards available epidemiological data. Based upon existing information, two indicator systems, Escherichia coli and enterococci, are tentatively recommended as the indicators of choice for this specific application.
