The visual appearance of a surface or volume is related to the illumination by which it is viewed, the conditions under which it is viewed, and the visual response characteristics of the observer. The appearance characteristics of greatest interest are those relating to: 1. Luminance (brightness, lightness). 2. Specular reflectance (gloss, luster, sheen). 3. Chromaticity (hue and saturation). 4. Transparency (translucence). 5. Nonuniformity (texture, pattern, contrasting areas such as those caused by flaws or foreign substances, etc.).
