Under present design standards steel ties, anchors, fasteners, joint reinforcement, reinforcing bars, and structural steel lintels and shelf angles in exterior masonry walls corrode at a rate which gives them a life expectancy of 5 to 70 years. Implementation of recommendations for improved design standards could double their life expectancy. Seventy references are cited.
