Loading Mode (Mode I/Mode III) Testing for Stress Corrosion Cracking

The use of loading mode variation (Modes I and III) to identify the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking is reviewed and evaluated, and some recent results on 7075 and 7090 aluminum are presented. It is concluded that the conventional interpretation (that anodic dissolution dominates when results in Modes I and III are similar, and hydrogen embrittlement dominates when the Mode III response is essentially zero) is likely correct. This separation of processes can serve as one means to verify that accelerated laboratory tests do in fact simulate service conditions and service failures.
