The thermodynamic analysis given in the preceding chapter provides a means for describing the observed thermoelectric properties of individual thermoelements and the thermocouples which may be formed by them. It does not, however, provide a model which can explain the mechanisms responsible for their behavior. This can be accomplished only by understanding the roles of the electrons in thermoelectric behavior.
