Report on the Paper Workshop
SourceThe percentage recycling of paper in the United States has recently increased, reversing the previous downward trend. Old corrugated containers appear to be recyclable at increasing rates without major new technology or incentives needed. Old newspapers are readily recycled, but new cleaning and contaminant control technology are needed to allow their use in the applications where the largest additional consumption would be available. Mixed waste paper represents the greatest challenge for increased recycling as there are substantial technical and economic factors to be resolved if its consumption is to be markedly increased.
Recommendations included the preparation of information kits for aiding municipal collection of segregated wastepaper, for assembling background information on the recycling technology of selected grades, and an analysis of the impact of various possible incentive programs.
