Development of an Environmental Wear Corrosion Test for Coinage Materials
SourceAn accelerated environmental wear test has been developed that duplicates the behavior of coins in circulation mechanistically as well as visually. The environmental wear properties of monometal copper coins and of copper clad steel coins are improved by addition of zinc or nickel to the copper to form brass or copper-nickel (CuNi) alloys. Noble metal clad steel coins have similar environmental wear resistance to their respective noble monometal coins.
