The experience of researchers has shown that many material properties, including chemical and mechanical factors as well as biological response, influence the selection of synthetic fibers for use in vascular graft production. Based on accepted safety and efficacy criteria, commercial polyester fibers have become well-established as construction materials for vascular grafts. The production procedures for polyester vascular grafts show basic resemblance to those used for manufacturing knitted and woven fabrics, with every step of the process having a potentially significant effect on the properties of the finished product. Important production steps and their effects on the properties of finished vascular grafts are reviewed in detail.
