Dacron® Arterial Grafts: Comparative Structures and Basis for Successful Use of Current Prostheses

By the 1960s, woven and knitted Dacron® grafts were in widespread use. Currently, approximately ten different Dacron prostheses are available for clinical use and several others are being developed. The advantages and limitations of three different types of grafts are discussed: (1) tightly woven and crimped; (2) knitted, crimped, and nonsupported; and (3) knitted, noncrimped, and supported. The microanatomy of grafts from each category is presented.
