Retrieval Analyses of Total Joint Components from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine Implant Retrieval Program

Source

The retrieval analyses of orthopaedic implants gathered at revision surgery or at autopsy provide much needed data as to the performance of such implants in vivo. This paper details the organization of such a retrieval program in a university medical center. The primary objective of this program is to identify specific implant design and material problem areas. Since such a variation of designs and materials of total joint implants exists, special emphasis is placed on these retrieval analyses. Femoral stem fracture in older total hip designs has been observed. Surface failure and cold flow of the ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene has been also found, particularly in some total knee designs.
