Studies of Aneurysm Clip Materials
SourceSeven surgical aneurysm clips, representing six stainless steels and one cobalt-based alloy, were subjected to a complete metallurgical characterization. The studies involved microstructural analysis, hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction analysis, and measurements of the galvanic passivation and resistance to pitting corrosion. Furthermore, one type of clip was subjected to a rigorous failure analysis. The results will be presented in terms of a comparative evaluation. The clinical significance of in vitro galvanic corrosion measurements will be supported by the discussion of the reasons for several failures of one type of aneurysm clip.
