Fabrication of Silicon Carbide Fiber-Reinforced Aluminum Composites
SourceA fabrication method for silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-aluminum composites was investigated. An SiC fiber manufactured from an organosilicon polymer was used, and the combination of slurry impregnation and hot pressing was adopted in the present study. The method was improved so as to control the volume fraction of fibers in the fabricated composites. The composites with high fiber content were achieved by means of this method. During the fabrication process, degradation of the SiC fibers was observed. The addition of silicon to the aluminum matrix was effective in reducing the degradation. However, the complete prevention of the degradation of SiC fibers could not be achieved by silicon alloying.
