Prediction of Cation Mobility in Soils from the Linear Distribution Coefficient
SourceThe ability to predict pollutant migration in the soil should be one of the objectives in disposal operations because the soil is the ultimate receptacle of the waste. The objective of the present work is to determine the relative mobility of different cations in a mixture traveling through the soil. The method used here is to derive a relationship from the exact solution to the one-dimensional, convective-dispersive-adsorptive equation which describes the motion of a cation within a complex mixture moving through the soil. It has been found that the length of time a cation in solution mixture takes to travel a certain depth of soil is directly proportional to (1 + K′ where K′ = [K ρ(1 − ε)]/ε, K is the linear distribution coefficient.
