Properties of Titanium for Industrial Applications with Emphasis on Ti-3Al-2.5V
SourceThe commercially pure grades of titanium satisfy a wide range of engineering applications due to their excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, excellent fabricability, and competitive costs. As is the case for most metal systems, alloying of titanium greatly extends its usefulness. This is illustrated through the presentation and comparison of toughness, creep, and tensile properties of the alloy Ti-3Al-2.5V (ASTM Grade 9) with those of commercially pure titanium (ASTM Grades 1, 2, and 3). The advantage of the alloy is evident when compared to commercially pure titanium and nickel-base alloys on the basis of design stress-to-density ratio. This ratio reflects weight efficiency of a structure and is directly related to cost. These property advantages when combined with excellent mill producibility, good fabricability, and good corrosion resistance offer new opportunities to the designer of industrial equipment for pressure vessel applications.
