Assessment of Nonmetallic Inclusion Content and the Relationship to Fatigue Life of One Percent Carbon-Chrome Steels
SourceCollaborative work by a steel maker and a bearing tube maker on the effect of nonmetallic inclusions on the fatigue life of bearing steels suggests that, at the high levels of cleanness now normally attainable, traditional methods of inclusion counting are irrelevant and may lead to unjustifiable rejection of perfectly satisfactory casts. Examination of failure mechanisms suggests that other metallurgical factors may have a more significant effect on bearing fatigue life.
