Effects of the Deep-Sea Environment on Battery Materials and Characteristics
SourceBattery materials are subjected to strong acid or alkali and oil in addition to the environmental factors which act on any material immersed in the sea. Glass reinforced epoxy has particular merit as a battery box material. Evaluation of materials for cell cases, compensating oil, and electrolyte de-entrainment devices are discussed and a deep-sea simulating test facility described. Data on deep-sea silver-zinc batteries show that power efficiency increases with pressure, charge acceptance is reduced at lower temperatures, and batteries may be operated satisfactorily to any depth in the sea without a pressure enclosure.
