Waterborne disease outbreaks in the period 1938 to 1951 decreased each year; however, since 1951, this trend has been reversed as shown in Fig. 1. The reason for this is not entirely clear; it could be due to increased reporting efficiency, or to the overloading of treatment facilities with lower quality feed water. In any case, the microbiological quality of potable water is coming under closer scrutiny, especially since the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974.
