A Test Protocol for Assessment of Primary Poisoning Hazard to Ground-Feeding Birds from Broadcast Pelletized Rodenticides
SourceA test protocol was developed after the large-pen field study guidelines suggested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assess potential primary poisoning hazard to birds from broadcast pelletized rodenticides used in orchards. The test employed six pen-reared ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) confined in each of twelve stationary 0.0047-ha pens. The pens were erected over ground cover similar to that in an adjacent orchard. The bait material was broadcast in the pens at zero (control), one, two, or ten times a base rate. The pheasants were maintained on a grain and seed mixture, which was broadcast into the pens. The advantages of the test protocol and the rationale for some of its features are discussed.
