This paper reviews the attempts of ASTM Committee C-7 on Lime to develop an acceptable method of assessing the expansive potential of unhydrated MgO in Type N hydrated lime in masonry mortar. Autoclave expansion tests on bars of mortar containing hydrated lime, portland cement, and aggregate are rejected because of variable results. A new test method has been developed in which autoclave expansion values for pressed tablets are more consistent and are considered more realistic in terms of field performance.
