High-Strength Steels—Formability and Applications
SourceSeveral high-strength sheet steels have been developed for the automotive industry for weight reduction. These high-strength materials have different forming characteristics compared with commonly used low-carbon steels. Formability parameters obtained from tension tests are discussed in detail to predict the forming behavior of these steels in stamping operations. The economic justification for material substitution in terms of strength levels and grades is discussed. Examples of formed automotive components are shown, and the material grade selections for these parts are also explained.
