The success of production sheet metal stamping operations is determined by material properties, in conjunction with the forming process. The uniaxial tension test provides useful values to compare materials. These may relate to properties for improved biaxial stretchability and deep drawability as determined by simulative tests. Mathematical models derived from continuum mechanics and microplasticity theory may be used to explain simple deformation processes.

The failure of most production stampings results from local necking. For this reason, if the forming operation can be designed such that no thickness straining occurs, forming performance can be improved. An experiment demonstrating this was conducted.
