From a series of Dr. Henry Leidheiser's papers and a Paint Research Institute (PRI) research proposal, an overview is presented of paint corrosion inhibition and potential research to clarify inhibition mechanisms and develop more accelerated testing methods. Possible mechanisms for corrosion inhibition in organic coatings by oxidizing inhibitors and metallic cations are discussed, as are the requirements for an ideal inhibitor for use in organic coatings. The writer suggests sponsorship by paint producers, steel companies, and firms with major steel structure investments of PRI research programs aimed at developing accelerated corrosion tests of paint inhibitors and defining the mechanisms by which the effective inhibitors protect steel.
