Effects of Rotary Peening and Surface-Conditioning Products on Structural Steel

Structural steel surfaces have traditionally been prepared with blasting techniques or with a combination of chemical etching and mechanical surface scouring. More recently, portable power tool systems using three-dimensional nonwoven surface conditioning products and an impacting and peening flap wheel are finding increased usage in the surface preparation of steel structures because they are efficient and effective. The profile, microhardness, and chemical nature of the surfaces generated by the power tool products and the traditional blasting technique are reported.
