Thermal Resistances of Insulated Brick Veneer Walls with Reflective and Nonreflective Air Spaces
SourceLarge (3 by 4 m) wall specimens were tested in a calibrated hot box to compare the thermal performance of vertical air spaces formed by brick veneer and reflective versus nonreflective sheathing. The test results indicate that the surface emittance of the sheathing facing a nonuniform air space bounded on the opposite side by a brick wall with unfinished mortar joints had only a very small effect on the total thermal resistance of a well-insulated wall construction. These results are attributed to typical brick veneer cavity wall system variables such as air convection, air leakage, irregular shape of the air space, and thermal conduction at mortar joints.
