Indoor Air Pollution, Energy Conservation, and the Use of Building Materials
SourceIndoor air pollution is an emerging health problem which has been linked to energy conservation and the use of building materials. Recent investigation has revealed harmful pollutants in greater concentration in energy-conserving houses than in the surrounding outdoor air. Some of the pollutants that have been found include carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, and radioactive radon. In the use of some construction materials, measures intended to reduce the consumption of energy may contribute to the buildup of indoor air pollution. The characteristics of construction material-source pollutants and the major methods of control are reviewed.
