The Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station at a site in Colorado, about 56 km (35 miles) north of Denver, is the first nuclear-powered unit of the system of the Public Service Co. of Colorado. Gulf General Atomic Inc., constructed this station under the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's Power Reactor Demonstration Program. The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) steam supply system provides 16.5-MPa (2400-psig), 538°C (1000°F) steam and 538°C (1000°F) reheat steam to a 3600-rpm tandem compound turbine generator to produce a net electric output of 330 MW.
