Monitoring Consolidation Settlements of Soft Soils Induced by Dewatering

Source

A case study of induced, consolidation settlements using wellpoint dewatering is presented. Included are a site description, results of laboratory tests, and details of an elaborate monitoring system consisting of water observation pipes, bench marks, settlement plates and anchors, piezometers, and nuclear density and moisture-content probes. A critique of each type of instrumentation is included in the paper. Five thousand field observations show that the wellpoint technique can produce predictable consolidation settlements.
