When discussing the properties and especially the toughness of 9 percent nickel (9Ni) steel, references are often made to the two different specifications for producing the steel: ASTM Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, Nine Percent Nickel, Double-Normalized and Tempered (A 353-74); and, ASTM Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, Quenched and Tempered 8 and 9 Percent Nickel (A 553-72).
