A description of the equipment and theory of an expansion pressure meter used directly in exploratory boreholes in rock is presented. The instrument shows promise in obtaining accurate and useful information for the stress-strain characteristics of soft bedrocks at economical cost. Test results of two of the first major engineering applications of the instrument in the United States are described.
