A study of 31 solid wastes representing a cross-section of the pulp and paper industry's manufacturing-derived residuals indicates that none would be “hazardous” in terms of the currently established criteria for metals analyzed for, including cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, copper, and zinc. Any likely occurrence to the contrary is thought to be incidental in nature. This judgment was based on the results of solid waste extractions and characterization of actual landfill leachates and interstitial fluids. Observed solid waste landfill leachate was best simulated with a water extraction.
