Relationship Between Critical Stretch Zone Width, Crack-Tip Opening Displacement, and Fracture-Energy Criterion: Application to SA-516-70 Steel Plates
SourceRelationships are developed between the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD), fracture-energy criterion (JIc), and critical stretch zone width (WSZc) using a simple geometrical model of the crack tip. Stretch zone width is directly measured from micrographs of fracture surfaces.
For three-point-bend specimens of SA-516-70 steel, JIc evaluated from measured values of WSZc is equal to 0.173 MJ-m−2 compared with 0.200 MJ-m−2 determined from the single-specimen method in which the crack onset point is detected by the electrical potential method.
