Crevice Corrosion and Its Relation to Stress-Corrosion Cracking
SourceCrevice corrosion of high-strength low-alloy D6AC and Type 316 stainless steel was surveyed using artificial crevice assemblies. A critical potential, referred to as the “crevice protection potential” was found, above which crevice corrosion occurs and below which it does not. The corrosion condition in the crevice is related importantly to the mechanism of cracking, that is, stress-corrosion cracking or hydrogen embrittlement.
